By The River…

Chicki and I love to walk beside the river. There are so many beautiful and interesting birds to see, from Swallows to Pelicans, tiny Kingfishers to Sulphur-crested Cockatoos.

Still, there’s a special charm to ducks, and several varieties come to visit from time to time. It’s hard to resist giving them a crumb or two when they come begging…

Some have become too tame for their own good, but let’s hope their friendliness does not become their undoing.

Welcome Visitors!

Regular readers of my blogs will know I love ducks. Actually, I’m very keen on many types of birds, but somehow, ducks have the kind of cuteness that tugs at my heartstrings.

So, I’m sorry to report that ducks are less common visitors to the local swimming baths than they were say, five years ago. But on the upside, that makes their visits even more special.

Here’s a photo of a pair of my feathered friends: Chestnut Teals.

Strutting His Stuff: A White-faced Heron

Strutting His Stuff
Strutting His Stuff

How proud this White-faced Heron looks as he struts his stuff near a couple of wild ducks!

It’s pretty rare for me to see these two species in close proximity, so naturally I reached for my camera.

This photo was taken in our local river swimming baths – a place that attracts many species of water-birds.

Ducks on the River

I guess that the local swimming baths is rather unique in more ways than one, for not only is it uncommonly large, it also attracts many sweet-looking birds. Not least among these are the ducks. These range in size from the large, Pacific Black Duck to the small Chestnut Teals, and in between fall the Australian Wood Ducks and Grey Teals.

Here’s a photo of a pair of Chestnut Teals in the baths. They make a lovely couple, don’t you think?

Wild Ducks in the Springtime

Wild ducks on the shoree
Wild ducks on the shore

There’s been an increase in the visibility of all birds in the local park since Spring has been in the air. From Cockatoos and Crimson Rosellas right through to water-birds such as Cormorants: all have been making their presence felt.

I’m glad to say that ducks have not been an exception to this rule. Most days now I see a pair (sometimes more). One of their favourite haunts is the shoreline, where they scour the area for food.

Enjoy!

Now and again, visitors to the local swimming baths are treated to the sight of a family of ducks. It’s a special time, for who can resist their charm?2013_1021imagefacebook0043
